Q&A with Civilitude’s Design Manager

By Categories: New HiresPublished On: June 21st, 2021

The Civilitude office is staffed with individuals who have unique backgrounds, interests, talents and aspirations. Dane, who serves as our design manager, is a creative and ambitious Civilitude employee who we would like everyone to get the chance to know a little more about!

Tell us about your background in what you used to work as before you began at Civilitude.

Before college I worked as a waiter, food handler and cashier. During college I worked as a machinist, delivery driver and paleontological intern. After college I worked as an Archaeological Field Technician conducting field work, excavations and lab analysis for projects across Texas, Louisiana, Colorado and Idaho. In between gigs I worked as a carpenter and pedi-cab driver. I then traveled the world a bit and came back to Austin where I started working as an EMT in the Critical Care unit at the old Brackenridge Hospital. I found engineering after I took a CAD course at ACC and I haven’t looked back. Fast-forward 8 years or so and here I am!

What does a typical day on the job look like?

My days are a mix of design work (55%), project coordination/management (20%), broad process improvement efforts (10%), employee training (10%) and coffee quality control (5%).

It’s karaoke night. What song are you singing?

Bon Jovi – It’s My Life

What is something you wish you knew earlier in life?

You are not old.

Have any interesting skills or talents you want to share?

I’m the lead guitarist, bassist and backup singer in the emerging Edwards-Perez Family Band.

How would your friends describe you?

A goofy semi-athletic folksy nerd.

If you could go on a dream vacation, where would you go and what would you do?

There are many places I would love to go, but if I had to pick one I would sail across the south pacific (Think Indonesia to the Great Barrier Reef to Hawaii) ; diving, snorkeling, island hoping, fishing, drinking fresh coconut juice (with rum of course) and generally exploring the most unique and bio-diverse reefs and terrain on the planet

What’s something you want to accomplish next?

I want to get in the best shape of my life, learn how to fly an airplane and drive a semi-truck.

Dane has lived through a number of adventures and hopes to embark on many more. Civilitude is nothing less than proud to have him on our team!
