Civilitude Chosen as Civil Engineer on Urban Roots’ New Farm
If there’s one thing we love about civil engineering, it’s that we get to work on a ton of different types of projects. Seriously, it’s not all about just buildings over here (although we do love our buildings)! Civilitude got chosen as part of Urban Roots’ Design Team for their new South Austin farm and we probably couldn’t be more excited about it. Especially those of us in the office who participate in the “Civilifarm,” which is our beloved office garden, pictured above! It may or may not be doing so hot at the moment — but we are engineers first and foremost, alright? This isn’t just any farm that we are helping design, by the way. Urban Roots is a local nonprofit organization that gives to the community in numerous ways. Obviously they produce healthy and organic food for our friends and neighbors. But their mission extends way beyond that. They provide learning and leadership opportunities to local youth (paid* opportunities, we might add!). The work that these youth and volunteers do generates about 160,000 pounds of produce that they donate to other local organizations. It’s truly phenomenal and such a fun environment to be a part of. They started their journey only in 2008 and they are already expanding to a larger location so that their impact can reach even further. We are so happy to be a part of it! The team we are working with is phenomenal, too. The group from Michael Hsu Office of Architecture are innovative and extremely talented, so no wonder they come from a national award-winning firm! Word + Carr Design Group keeps us thinking about all things beauty and ensure that we design it in a way that will give visitors the absolute best experience. On top top of that, they’re all a pleasure to work with. You can read more about the South Austin Urban Roots Farm Design Team from Urban Roots’ blog here. And when you get a moment, be sure to schedule a volunteer day out at the farm — it’s always a great time!
